Born in Augusta, Georgia, Dease's musical journey began with the saxophone and trumpet before he discovered his passion for the trombone at the age of 17. He embarked on a musical odyssey that eventually led him to New York City in 2001, where he became part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School. There, he earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees and quickly built a reputation as a brilliant soloist, sideman, and bandleader.
Dease's ninth album on Posi-Tone, titled "Best Next Thing" and released in 2022, is a testament to his artistry. The album assembles exceptional musicians to explore the essence of the blues and redefine the abstract truths of jazz for contemporary audiences. It garnered critical acclaim, earning a coveted 4-star review in DownBeat Magazine.
Dease's achievements include being the winner of the 69th, 70th, and 71st Annual DownBeat Poll for Trombonist of the Year and a multi-Grammy award winner as a member of the Christian McBride Big Band. He is a sought-after lead and ensemble trombonist, having performed with various jazz orchestras and ensembles led by luminaries such as Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, and more.
As a jazz educator, Dease's impact is equally profound. He conducts masterclasses, residencies, and workshops at prestigious institutions worldwide and serves as a professor of jazz trombone at Michigan State University.
